Sailing holidays in Spain
Spain is one of the premier sailing destinations in Europe. With more than 4000 km of coastline and warm weather, Spain offers
plenty of opportunities for watersports. Popular sailing destinations in Spain include the Costa Brava, Costa del Sol and the
Balearics.
North Spain offers unspoilt cruising in a mild climate. The cruising area splits naturally in two regions: the North coast
and the delightful rias of Galicia. The comfortable summer cruising season runs from early June to late September, when the worst
Biscay depressions are more rare. Even so, outside the rias, yachts and crews may be exposed at times to severe Atlantic weather,
and should be able to cope with this.
The climate varies greatly from the Atlantic north coast, which is wet and cool, to the Mediterranean south and east, where summers
are very hot and winters mild. The winds are just as varied, the north coast coming under the influance of Atlantic weather systems,
with south-westerly to north-westerly winds predominating in winter and northerly winds in summer, although land and sea breezes
can be experienced inshore. This is also the case along the south-western coast during summer, while the rest of the year, winds
are either easterly or westerly. Alternating sea and land breezes are also characteristic of the Mediterranean coast. The eastern
coast and Balearics are occasionally affected by the Mistral, a N or NW wind which can rapidly reach gale force.
Mallorca: This is holiday country! Geared to serve visitors from throughout Europe, including Spain. The summer cruising season
runs from late May to the end of September.
